Opel Astra Hatchback Motoring Review
The Opel New Astra is one of the most modern vehicles on the market that falls in the small family car segment, manufactured by the Germany car maker Opel. The car has been in production since the year 1991. Like most genius brands, the Opel Astra has taken various names in different markets; such names as the Vauxhall Astra, the Buick Excelle XT and the Chevrolet Astra or Vectra. It follows after the Opel Kadett and is followed after by the Chevrolet HHR. Opel South Africa provides a portfolio of models namely the Astra Essentia model and the Astra 1.4 Turbo Enjoy, together with the Astra 1.4 Turbo Enjoy Plus or the Astra 1.6 Turbo Sport.
The New Astra uses two engine options, i.e. the 1.6 L and the 1.4 L engines, all coming as front drive engines. The upper trim level models demonstrate their competence by providing much more power and torque; and comfort and luxury. The 1.6L engine on the Essentia is capable of generating 85kW of power, while the 1.4 L engine on the 1.4T Enjoy generates a good 103 kW of power, same as the 1.4T Enjoy Plus, while the upper trim model, the 1.6 T Sport generates power of 132kW. The maximum torque for the 1.6 Essentia is 155Nm; while the 1.4T Enjoy and the Enjoy Plus models both do 200Nm; while the Sport model does 320Nm. The New Astra is a modern vehicle that has the ability to combine both performance and economies of scale perfectly well, inclusive of its fuel consumption capabilities. The Essentia consumes 6.3L per 100km, while the Enjoy and Enjoy Plus both consume 5.9 L per 100km; while the Sport variant does 6.8 L per 100km. A turbo function is common on the top three models, save for the Essentia model.
Transmission across the model range is as follows; the Essentia engine uses a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the rest of the models make use of the 6-speed manual gearbox and the front wheel suspension across the model range features the MacPherson struts, while the rear suspension takes on the Watt’s link. Most Germany car manufacturers have been renowned for proving some of the most reputable brands such brands as the Audi and the Astra is no exception. The New Astra comes with a perfectly defined exterior style and appeal. This is aided by the wide choice of features such as the halogen headlamps and the Bi-xenon headlamps. The stylish look is courtesy of the color coded door handles, the color coded bumpers & mirror housing. The black moulding belt line on the lower three models along the trim line and the chrome moulding belt line provides the classic distinction from the rest of the vehicles in Astra’s product line. The Essentia comes with 17 inch alloy wheels and the sport model does well with 18 inch alloy wheels.
The interior of the New Astra is a spectacle to talk about; it provides top of the range comfort, luxury and great convenience. Inside the vehicle you will access to radio controls on steering column, and the joy of the leather upholstery and the aircon & climate control on the sport model, among many such features. Entertainment is provided by the radio, together with the CD front loader and the MP3 function across all the models. The car also provides easy handling and control, courtesy of power features that include the power steering, the electric windows and mirrors. The driver has available for comfortable driving, the cruise control most useful when on long drives across the country. Safety and security is provided courtesy of the most advanced high tech features that include the ABS, the hydraulic brake fade assist, the engine immobilizer, the ISOFIX Attachments on Outer Rear Seats and the Airbag De-activation Switch.
Opel offers this New Astra with a warranty of 5 years/120,000km and a service plan of 5 years/ 90,000km. The Anti-Corrosion warranty is valid for 5 years with unlimited mileage, demonstrating the confidence Opel has in the quality of their work on this vehicle. The New Astra is one vehicle that one would recommend very confidently; just as confident the car maker is with their brand.
