The LC Cross may share the same first name as its little sibling, but this LC on stilts is anything but cuddly!
Approaching the front of the car reveals a short blunt nose, giving it a macho appearance. Add to this an increased 160mm ground clearance over the standard LC, along with a rear mounted spare wheel and suddenly this big brother has a rather aggressive, adventurous stance, like a panda on steroids. Admittedly that’s a bit of a weird image to try and get out of your head, but at the end of the day it’s still cute with some added muscle and you can’t help but feel drawn to it.
Under the bonnet, the Cross shares the same power train as the rest of the LC range. This 1 342cc engine is mated to a five-speed transmission, boasting 63kW of power and 110Nm of torque.
The ride quality from such a small vehicle isn’t bad, and although you have to work the gears to keep the machine humming along in its sweet spot, it cruises on the open road nicely, as long as you avoid large hills. Unfortunately we didn’t get to drive the Cross in its natural environment – the urban jungle, where it should really thrive.
However, it did conquer the roads we used, which included a helping of gravel and sand, giving the suspension a healthy workout. There were no nasty rattles or shakes inside the cabin, which signals just how far the Chinese have come in terms of quality.
Speaking of quality… the interior is well appointed with standard equipment and good finishes, considering the price. All models boast ABS with EBD as standard, along with radio/MP3 player, aircon as well as front and rear electric windows.
The top spec model, LC Cross GT, houses six airbags, while the other derivatives have two. The GT model is also equipped with a Park Distance Control (PDC) system along with a host of other additional extras.
With a manufacturer trying to make headway into the local market, pricing is key and Geely has done a remarkable job at giving it’s little Cross an aggressive price. Is this the vehicle that will change peoples’ perceptions around Chinese automotive brands? Only time will tell.
All Geely’s come with a 36-month or 100 000km factory mechanical warranty.
