Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Motoring Review
Born through the ingenuity of the legendary Japanese car manufacturer, Toyota as part of the Land Cruiser family line up, the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 enjoys all the benefits of the family name and not for what the previous legends had to offer, but also for what it has to offer. The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 is built by the same hands that built the Land Cruiser Prado, the Legend 40 and all the VX line up models.
The Land Cruiser 200 has in its offing two engine options that include either a 4.7 litre dual overhead cam electronic fuel injected V8 petrol power plant and a 4.5 litre twin turbo diesel V8. The diesel engine provides greater torque, generating an unbelievable 650 Nm of torque as compared to the petrol's 410 Nm. The car is a full time 4x4. Both the petrol and diesel engines come fitted with Hill Start control and Downhill Assist control, while the petrol engine in addition comes with the CRAWL 4x4 control system. When it comes to safety and security the Land Cruiser 200 stands tall. It has advanced features that include the multi-terrain ABS brakes, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution and brake assist, while the VX and Sahara models come with an unbelievable ten airbags, strategically placed around the cabin, while the GXL model comes with six airbags.
The comfort on the Land Cruiser is something that all drivers would love to experience for themselves. The Land Cruiser provides very comfortable seats, while the Sahara version takes the comfort a bit higher with leather trim coming on. Also added on the list of goodies are the modern features that include the 6-speaker audio system, a 6-disc in-dash CD player and auxiliary jack. The Sahara model demonstrates its upgrade status with the 6 DVD system, 9 speakers and EMV navigation. There is a dual-zone climate control with pollen filter, which comes standard across the range and as the case afore, the Sahara goes beyond most other vehicles, offering a four-zone climate control system.
The current model series consists of 6 variants that include the Toyota Landcruiser 4.7 GXL, Toyota Landcruiser 4.5 GXL Turbo Diesel, Toyota Landcruiser 4.7 VX, Toyota Landcruiser 4.5 VX Turbo Diesel, Toyota Landcruiser 4.7 Sahara, and the Toyota Landcruiser 4.5 Sahara Turbo Diesel. These variants are found across a three trim level case, namely the GXL, the VX and the Sahara. Common features on all models are the automatic transmission, full-time 4WD engine, 17in alloy wheels including spare wheel, climate-controlled air-conditioning with pollen filter, dual front airbags, front side airbags, full-length three-row side curtain-shield airbags, second-row seat outboard seatbelt pretensioners, ABS brakes, with EBD and Brake Assist, Vehicle Stability Control, Active Traction Control, Hill-Start Assist Control, Smart Entry and Smart Start, second-row seatbelt anchorage height adjusters, third-row seatbelt automatic locking retractors, key reminder warning, in-glass radio antenna and rear spoiler.
When we talk about fuel economy and consumption we have to be congniscent of the fact that this car is not for those who love to drive while watching the fuel gauge. Such power has to be attributed to something. It being not a pure hybrid car functioning on electric power, it has to consume comparable fuel that drives this massive engine at the speed it does. Its fuel consumption is not bad though, recording 10.3 L/100km and taking 16.6 L/100km whilst towing about 1700kgs. This is however manageable by real users of the Land Cruiser.
As a safety measure Toyota advises that the Land Cruiser should be fitted with anti-sway control when towing more than its tare weight and that a weight-distribution hitch should be used at all times and that the vehicle should not tow for the first 800km in its new life and the towing ball and bracket should be tightened after 1000km. The vehicle should also be serviced at 10,000km for towing, shifting from the 20,000km in ordinary circumstances.
So in the end we are saying is that the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 offers power and economy in a heavy-duty package perfectly well; creating that perfect towing platform you have always been looking for.
