Like many of its competitors, the fearsome Nissan Pathfinder might be big, difficult to park and a tad ungainly, but it certainly makes a big statement in urban or off-road surrounds.
That’s our summary after spending some time with the vehicle which presents itself in 4-litre V6 guise, coupled to a five-speed auto, which can be shifted manually when required. It’s smooth and despite its size is reasonably nimble around the suburbs. Despite its size, the Pathfinder is no slouch and while we didn’t get the opportunity to hit the rough stuff, the low range on offer will no doubt prove competent in most situations.
Visually the newcomer gets a new bonnet, revised grille, and a new bumper assembly. Adding 80mm to the length of the new Pathfinder the bumper is more rounded and lends a more sporting touch to the car.
Changes at the rear include a new bumper design with squared off edges to give a larger and lower mass for a more stable, tougher appearance. The interior has also been upgraded which includes a newly-designed switchgear, revised door trims, new seat fabric and the addition of chrome highlights.
Safety is provided by an ESP stability-control system which can be disabled for off-road driving. Others include EBD, Vehicle Dynamic Control, while dual front airbags, curtain and side airbags complement the package.
Don’t forget all the niceties, such as dual climate control with vents at the rear, cruise control, and electric seats up front, while exterior mirrors can also be folded away electronically. Price: R526 300
