Italian manufacturer Piaggio has equipped all new Vespa models with leading-technology, electronic fuel-injected engines. These new Eco-Smart systems use 15 percent less fuel than previous editions and optimise the bikes’ performance.
The electronic fuel injection system ensures the air and fuel mixture in the combustion chamber is optimized at all times and allows the single cylinder unit to pick up more smoothly and progressively from lower engine speeds.
Vespa says the change from carburettors to electronic fuel injection will give the four-stroke air cooled engines more power and torque at lower engine speeds, important for the relentless stop-start conditions of city commuting.
The benefits of the new engines can also be appreciated on longer journeys where extended stretches of roadway come into play. And, owners who want a fast getaway will notice improved cold-starts, thanks to fuel injection.
Fortunately, the increase in efficiency hasn't had an adverse effect on performance. The bigger Vespas, such as the 300cc models, can reach a top speed of about 130 kilometers per hour.
The new i.e. (“iniezione elettronica”, Italian for “fuel injection”) models carry many classic Vespa styling cues, such as enlarged information dials and the unique, all-steel monocoque chassis, which provides greater rigidity and a more stable ride. The superior trailing link suspension is designed to better handle potholes and other hazardous conditions, and the front-disc braking system allows riders to safely make faster stops.
