Despite our sub-standard fuel, Peugeot has taken a brave step in importing the new 207 range, all with Euro 5-compliant engines.
And after a week with the 207 Dynamic 1.6 Vti we’re convinced they’re on the right track.
Besides arriving with all the bells and whistles, the engine proved extremely tractable under a variety of conditions. The willing engine still produces the same power as the older version - 88kW at 6 000 rpm and peak torque of 160Nm at 4 250pm which is enough to get to 100km/h in some 9.6 seconds, while top speed is given at 190km/h.
Peugeot claims urban-cycle fuel consumption has been reduced, while the CO2 emissions rating is lower too. We couldn’t quite match Peugeot’s claim of 6.1-litres per 100 kilometres but we’re quite satisfied with the 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres it delivered as indicated by the onboard computer.
There are few interior or exterior changes for this attractive five-door hatch while the ride itself is indeed a smooth one, albeit the clutch caught a bit late and took some getting used to. Interior space is generous while the boot at 270-litres is adequate. On the subject of the interior: the 207 has everything from a dual climate control to adjustable steering; auto headlights; a great CD/Radio Mp3 compatible audio system; and electrically operated windows and mirrors. Probably the only thing missing are electrically-operated seats.
Buyers will thus have to tick fewer boxes on the extras list at purchase, because it literally has everything.
There’s a service plan thrown in for good measure - four years or 60 000km for your R205 625.
