Adam and Mokka to bolster Opel line-up

MANY of you may remember the Opel Mokka and the cute Adam city car from the Johannesburg International Motor Show (JIMS), last year. General Motors South Africa has just announced that both these models will be heading to our shores.

The Adam and Mokka will be introduced to South Africa for sale in 2015 as part of a global product offensive by Opel which will see the German brand introduce 27 new vehicles and 17 engines in applicable markets by 2018.

“The Opel Adam and Mokka were shown to the South African public at last year’s JIMS, where we experienced overwhelmingly positive reactions from consumers and the media.” said Opel brand manager, Christopher Cradock.

The little Adam city car is named after Adam Opel, the founder of the Opel brand who started out as a sewing machine manufacturer in 1862. It’s aimed at the Minis, DS3s and Fiat 500s of the world in the premium sub-compact hatchback segment.

The Adam is aimed at providing the customer with thousands of individualisation options which seem to be a hit within this segment. There are three engines available overseas, in the Adam, which include a 1.2 and 1.4-litre variant. However, we expect the newer 1.0-litre three-cylinder SIDI turbo engine to début locally

The Mokka is said to offer the high seating position, space, versatility and go-anywhere nature of an SUV, in a compact package with clever proportions.

It’s been ear-marked for an introduction in the second quarter of 2015. With over 240 000 Mokka orders in Europe it’s safe to say that this is an important car for Opel in our SUV-hungry local climate.

There are two 1.7-litre diesel variants, a 1.6 naturally aspirated and 1.4 turbo petrol engine available overseas. We expect that we will get the 103kW/200Nm 1.4 turbo.

Official engine specifications and model derivatives for both the Adam and Mokka will be confirmed closer to the time of launch.
