Audi A3 drop-top makes debut at Frankfurt

THE ALL-NEW Audi A3 Cabriolet will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this week.

Based on the new A3 hatch, the new cabrio is bigger than the model it replaces. This means luggage capacity has grown by an impressive 60 litres.

Styling is pretty much the same as the non-cabrio models, but additional styling cues give it a sporty edge. It works equally well at the rear, which is normally where cabrio designers tend to fail.

The A3 Cabriolet has a soft fabric roof that is stretched over a lightweight kinematic mechanism. It opens and closes in less than 18 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h. It has a glass rear window and is available in black, grey and brown. Audi’s new A3 cabrio is around 50kg lighter than the model it replaces, which means it has a kerb weight of 1 365kg. It should be a spritely performer coupled to any of the petrol or diesel powertrains.

The interior has been carried over from the A3 hatch. This means pristine quality and exceptional comfort. A wide range of options and accessories are available as well, which means you can make the cabriolet as luxurious as any other Audi out there.

Audi has also supplied preliminary data on the new S3 Cabriolet. It will be launched soon after the A3 drop-top, but will have a 2.0-litre turbocharged four delivering 220kW and 380Nm of torque. Audi claims a 0-100km/h sprint of 5.4 seconds.
