Audi’s ‘S’ offensive

WITH an already impressive product portfolio, Audi South Africa has announced that more performance-based vehicles will enter its range in 2015. By the end of the year, the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer will have no less than 13 S models for consumers to choose from.

We have already seen the S3 hatch grace our shores and now there is a more practical version in the form of the S3 Sportback, the third generation of this five-door performance hatch that makes use of the same mechanicals as its hatch sibling.
There is a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine under the bonnet that produces 206kW and 380Nm of torque. Unlike the hatch, the Sportback will only be available with the S tronic automatic transmission.

Performance should be impressive with Quattro four-wheel-drive providing traction and a relatively low kerb weight of 1 445kg, all contributing to a 0-100km/h sprint time of five seconds anda top speed of 250km/h. It won’t hurt at the pumps either, with fuel consumption figures of just 6.9litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 159 g/km.The Sportback is now available at R500 500 with Audi’s5-year/100 000km Freeway Plan.

Further down the line,we will see the S3 sedan launch in May. The sedan shares the same mechanicals as the other S3 variants and provides an even more practical package.

But Audi’s assault doesn’t stop there either, as there are plans to introduce a Special Edition Audi TTS. Only 500 of these have been made and a mere 25 earmarked for South Africa.

Later in the year Audi will launch the facelifted überluxurious S8 as well as the S1, which revives a badge not seen since the 1980s.Rounding off the S models for 2014 will be the S3 cabriolet towards the end of the year.
