Audi’s sizzling S1 on its way to SA

THE AUDI S1 takes us back to a pioneering rally car from the 1980s that taught the world about the black art of four-wheel-drive. Three decades later, the famous nomenclature has been revived. This time the S1 is based on the relatively tame A1, but promises to be just as exciting as its name suggests.

There will be an S1 as well as an S1 Sportback.Its 2.0-litre TFSI engine kicks out 170kW and 370Nm and is mated with a six-speed manual gearbox as well as Quattro all-wheel-drive. In terms of performance, the S1 will sprint to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds and the Sportback in 5.9 seconds onto a top speed of over 250km/h.

To help it through the twisties, the S1 has a sports suspension system and an electromechanical power steering.

Expect 17-inch wheels as standard with optional 18-inch items. Xenon plus headlights - which are linked to LED rear lights with new horizontally structured graphics - are standard.
The interior features high gloss air vent sleeves that have a piano-black finish, which are contrasted by the stainless steel foot pedals.

There are standard sports seats along with climate control, a six-speaker audio system with auxiliary and iPod connection as well as SD card reader linked to a 6.5-inch retractable colour display, a Bluetooth interface and a driver’s information system.

The S1 is expected to reach local shores in the fourth quarter of 2014.
