Autodealer dream buy: Lexus GS

29.01.2016

IT’S time for another Autodealer dream buy, where we browse through our own list of cars for sale and pick a car that we’d like to own. This week, we’re in the mood for something luxuriously affordable and with a reputation for reliability… it just had to be the Lexus GS.

Lexus GS (S190)

The Lexus GS range has always been an under-the-radar type of luxury vehicle. It’s very unassuming yet, as a package, it is very accomplished, comfortable and presents great value, especially in the used market. For this dream buy we have selected the S190 or generation three of the GS, which still has many modern features but can be had for the price of an entry-level hatchback. Being a Lexus there aren’t many problems associated with the car however, we still urge you to consider the points below:

What to watch out for:

  • The direct injection motors in the GS300 models are known to suffer from carbon build-up on the intake valves so should you consider buying one a carbon cleaning is advised with many outlets available to sort out the problem for a couple of thousand Rand;
  • Try to get year models, 2007 and above as the GS300 models received new engine internals during its mid-life updates. The facelifted models also did not suffer from fuel delivery and pressure systems;
  • Have a mechanic check that the water pump is not leaking as this could be costly to repair;
  • Ensure that the vehicle has oil and that the previous owner was mindful to check the level on a regular basis as these cars are known to use oil.
