BMW 6-series Coupe quietly axed

10.05.2017

In a surprise development, a new report from the United States claims that production of the BMW 6-series Coupe stopped back in February of this year.

Citing a BMW spokesperson, publication Road & Track claims that while assembly of the 6-series cabriolet and Gran Coupe are to continue, the Munich giant has decided to halt Coupe manufacturing without a proper reason being provided.

Speculation however continues to mount that the arrival of the revived 8-series might have had a part in the decision to axe the Coupe, with the slumping in sales of pure two-door coupes also being cited as another possible reason.

In March, Australia's caradvice.com.au reported that a trademark application had been filed by BMW for the nomenclatures 825, 830, 850, M850 and M8, while another US publication, Motor Trend, claimed that the 8-series could use the same CLAR platform as the 7-series, meaning the use of its range of six, eight and twelve cylinder engines.
