BMW X2 shows its true self

Shown in multi-coloured layers of camouflage at the Frankfurt Motor Show last month, first undisguised spy images of the new BMW X2 have leaked online ahead of its yet-to-be-announced world debut.

Pictured on the back of a car carrier, the leaks sees the latest addition to BMW's growing Sport Activity Vehicle range adopting the same coupe-like design as the recently spotted X4, but with a wider interpretation of the trademark kidney grille, upwards moving rear shoulder line, thinner headlights, lightly covered taillights again inspired by those of the X4, and a BMW badge affixed to the C-pillar.

As it will ride on the same front-wheel drive UKL platform as the X1, 2-series Active Tourer, forthcoming 1-series and the Mini range, the X2 will more than likely mirror the former in terms of power with petrol engines either displacing 1.5 or 2.0-litres, and diesels only 2.0-litres in varies states of tune. In addition, some models will also offer xDrive all-wheel drive as an option, as well as the popular ZF-sourced eight-speed Steptronic gearbox as opposed to the standard six-speed manual.

Given the almost complete lack of disguise, rumour is that the X2 could make its premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November or at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit two months later.
