BMW X4 now features M-Performance with M40i

22.02.2016

The BMW X4 has been a leader within the Sports Activity Coupe segment. It offers customers a unique design with some added SUV qualities.

Mercedes-Benz will soon be joining the fight for customers attention with the GLC Coupe which is in its development stage. BMW has taken note of this and have thus decided to offer customers a sportier version of the X4. The X4 M40i features some of that iconic BMW M Performance that we know and love.

The exterior of the new BMW X4 M40i clearly demonstrates the high standards set by BMW M Performance cars. The X4 M40i features, amongst other things, sportier bumpers. The side mirrors which are finished in metallic Ferric Grey most definitely elude to the performance characteristics of the car. Add to that large, light weight 19” inch alloy wheels and the X4 M40i looks the performance part.

As for the powerplant, well BMW has made use of its 3.0-litre, in-line six-cylinder engine  which is found in the BMW X4 xDrive35i. The motor now develops 265kW and 465Nm of torque. The X4 M40i also utilises an 8-speed automatic gearbox as well as BMWs xDrive all-wheel drive system which helps the X4 maintain its practical and adventurous appeal.

In order to fulfil the challenging dynamic demands placed upon BMW M Performance vehicles in all respects, the BMW development engineers have optimised the drive unit using a forged steel crankshaft in addition to components from the high-performance engine fitted to the BMW M3 and BMW M4, which were introduced in 2014. This is how, among other things, pistons with an adapted top ring, crankshaft bearings and high power spark plugs found their way from the six-cylinder inline engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology to the new BMW X4 M40i.

In addition to the M3 and M4 components, the M40i features a distinctive exhaust system which is unmistakably recognizable due to tailpipes on both sides finished in fine Chrome Black. The radical technical changes include, in addition to intelligent valve control, a back pressure-optimized double-flow exhaust system fitted beneath the floor of the vehicle, as well as resonator tuning specific to M Performance. The result is a charismatic sound, individually determined by the driver depending on driving mode and driving situation, perfectly emphasizing the car's sporty character acoustically.

With regard to driving dynamics, the BMW X4 had already set the benchmark in the Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) segment of the premium midsize class. Extensive retuning of the BMW X4 M40i chassis has now raised the transverse and longitudinal dynamic properties to an even higher level, which are sure to satisfy the demands of even the most ambitious sports drivers.

The increased camber on the double-joint front axle and the strengthening of the wishbones result in a more sensitive steering response and more neutral self-steering behaviour. Stiffer springs and reinforced stabilizers on both front and rear axles also reduce roll tendency and optimize driving dynamics. These measures are most effectively supported by the M Performance-specific tuning, performed on the electronically controlled damping system.

The variable sports steering, sharpened by M Performance-specific tuning, delivers heightened steering precision; the steering feel is further refined by optimized road feedback.

As for equipment, well the new BMW X4 M40i is extensively equipped when ordered as a standard vehicle. Apart from the 8-speed Steptronic sports transmission the X4 M40i also gets a Dynamic Damper Control system, Variable Sports Steering, Performance Control, Park Distance Control, Xenon headlights and fog lights are all on board as well as sports seats, M leather steering wheel and the 19-inch M light-alloy wheels.

We will be sure to keep you updated on when the X4 M40i will be available in showrooms. Be sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook to stay updated.
