Bigger, classier Merc GL

MERCEDES-BENZ has launched the latest version of its most opulent SUV, the GL-Class. As big as it is grand, the GL competes directly with the all-new Range Rover, launched late last year.

The new GL is as capable off the road as it is on it. Included in the standard package is a permanent four-wheel-drive, ad off-roading assistant, hill descent control and a system that allows you to choose between six different driving programmes. The hardware features include underbody protection, low-range gearbox, longitudinal diff lock and a maximum ground clearance of 306mm.

Three models (one diesel and two petrol powertrains) are currently available - GL350 BlueTEC, GL500 4Matic BlueEfficiency and the mighty GL63 AMG. Mercedes claims a drop in fuel consumption of between 18% to 20% in the GL350 and GL500 respectively.

If fuel consumption is not your concern, we suggest you look at the AMG model. Its 5.5-litre bi-turbo powertrain provides a collosal 410kW and 760Nm of torque. This allows the GL to accelerate to 100km/h in under five seconds and on to a limited top speed of 250km/h.

The GL‘s prices include the 6-year/100 000km PremiumDrive maintenance package.
