City slicker is back


SOUTH AFRICANS will remember the recently discontinued Renault Twingo fondly, mostly as a cute city car and mostly as a small pocket rocket when the Twingo RS and RS Gordini were released. Here at Autodealer, we were saddened with the news that the facelifted model would not be making its way to local shores. We can only hope that the all-new model will be considered for local introduction.

The new car has been designed with the original model (released in overseas markets in 1992), as well as the iconic Renault 5 in mind. The rake of theTwingo’s rear screen and shoulders are inspired by the rear-engined Renault 5 Turbo.

It has a five-door set-up for added practicality and is going with the same theme that many manufacturers have chosen in terms of the customisation options, which on the Twingo include differing door-mirror colours, side mouldings and decals.

The most important part of the new models is the engine and, to be more specific, where it has been placed. With the aim of making a more capacious cabin and improving the turning circle while providing a smaller road footprint, engineers have mounted the new Twingo’s engine in the rear. The small car will be made in collaboration with Daimler, who has shared development costs with Renault as this same layout will be used for the next-generation two- and four-seat Smart cars.

More exact specifications including engine size and model variants will be unveiled when the Twingo is showcased at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in March.
