Dakar: Peterhansel surges in Stage 9


Multiple Dakar winner in both motorcycle and car categories, Stéphane Peterhansel took on yesterday’s tough Stage 9 with the aim of catching leader Nani Roma.

The Frenchman won the stage and halved Roma’s lead, which is now just over 12 minutes with four days of intense racing to come.

Giniel de Villiers had a quiet day piloting his Imperial Hilux through the Atacama dunes. The South African finished the stage fifth and subsequently drops to fifth in the overall classification.The GWM/Haval team driver Christian Lavieille maintained his ninth place overall after finishing the stage in 15th position.

In the bike class, Marc Coma continued on by winning the ninth stage ahead of Joan Barreda and extending his lead at the top. The KTM rider is now over 40 minutes ahead of Barreda and some 98 minutes ahead of third-place man JordiViladoms.
