Dakar: Things tighten up in Stage 10

WEDNESDAY’s Stage 10 of the Dakar Rally saw veteran Stéphane Peterhansel claw back time on overall leader Nani Roma as the Frenchman finished the stage in second place behind Nasser Al-Attiyah.

The gap between first and second place is now just over two minutes with three days to go.South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers took fourth place in the stage to leapfrog to fourth overall, albeit it nearly an hour behind the leader.

Fellow countrymen Thomas Rundle and Juan Mohr delivered another steady performance to finish 21st on special Stage 10 between Iquique and Antofagasta in Chile. This puts the privateer pair in 22nd position in the overall classification.

The bike category has been marred slightly by the penalisation of several riders, including second-place man Joan Barreda who was handed a 15-minute penalty for speeding earlier in the week.  JordiViladoms was also handed a 15-minute penalty yesterday for an engine change.

Despite a fifth-place finish in the stage, Marc Coma still holds a commanding overall lead of over 44 minutes over Barreda. South African Factory KTM rider Riaan van Niekerk rode well in the 10thstage and managed to finish 12th, which places him 12th in the overall standings heading in to Stage 11.
