Dakar becoming A Spanish affair - Stage 7

After a few navigational issues in the previous stages, former WRC champion Carlos Sainz claimed victory in the seventh stage of the 2014 Dakar Rally.

The Spaniard still remains outside of the top five overall, however. His fellow countryman Nani Roma retains first position overall after finishing the stage in fourth place.

The 533km loop in Stage 7 was another test for Giniel de Villiers and co-driver Dirk von Zittzewitz, who finished sixth in the stage after their Hilux struggled to cope with the altitude. The result meant that the local boys moved up to third overall though, making them the only Toyota in the top five along with the four Minis.

Fellow South Africans Leeroy Poulter and co-driver Rob Howie had another bad day at the office as they only managed a 68th position finish, which meant that they dropped to 30th overall. The other South African privateer team of Thomas Rundle and Juan Mohr fared better when they achieved their best stage result of the rally on Sunday by improving their overall position to 19th.

In the motorcycle section it was Joan BarredaBort of Spain who took Sunday’s stage victory. In a close second was overall leader Marc Coma, who put in a solid ride to cement his position on top of the leader boardby some 38 minutes going into the second week of racing.
