Dakar reaches its third country - Stage 8

The eighth stage of the 2014 Dakar bid farewell to Argentina as competitors crossed over into the Andes Mountains in Chile.

It was a good day for Qatari driver Nasser al-Attiyah, who finished Stage 8 over a minute ahead of Stéphane Peterhansel.

Overnight leader Nani Roma could only muster a sixth-place finish, but still maintains the overall lead.Giniel de Villiers finished the stage in seventh place, surrendering just two seconds to Roma and maintaining his third position overall.

Cyril Despres put in a solid ride on his factory Yamaha and secured a first stage win for himself this year and indeed his first stage victory for the team. The two men out front overall surrendered very little time as Joan Barreda finished the stage in second place with leader Marc Coma taking third. Local Broadlink KTM rider Riaan van Niekerk rode well, finishing seventh in Stage 8.

Today’s stage will take riders to Iquique, where the ocean will be visible for the first time during the event. The Atacama dunes will also form part of the special stage.
