Facelifted Mercedes-Benz GLA / AMG-GLA 45 bow in Detroit

Teased in a single image last week, Mercedes-Benz officially unveiled the refreshed versions of its GLA and performance AMG-GLA 45 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Monday.

GLA

Externally, the changes are subtle with new front and rear bumpers, new LED headlights with colour temperature control in place of the previous bi-Xenons, new alloy wheel designs, optional comfort off-road suspension allowing for a 30 mm increase in ride height, and a new colour somewhat oddly dubbed Canyon Beige.

Optionally buyers can also specify the Night Package which includes 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, chrome exhaust tips and black finishes around the windows and on the grille, mirrors and roof rails.

Inside, the changes are equally subtle with the freestanding eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system now incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the seats featuring new covers, centre console upgraded with new materials and the switches for the electric seats gaining a chrome finish.

A 360-degree view camera system can now be had as an option along with a Hands-free opening tailgate, with new safety items consisting of Active Brake Assist with autonomous intervention and Attention Assist.

Model-wise, the range also benefits from a new petrol GLA220 model exclusively available with 4Matic all-wheel drive. Slotting in between the base GLA200 and GLA250, the 220 makes use of Benz's familiar 2.0-litre turbo developing 135 kW and 300 N.m of torque.

Elsewhere, the GLA will offered with a choice of four turbopetrol engines (GLA180, GLA200, GLA220 4Matic and GLA250 / GLA250 4Matic) and three turbodiesels (GLA180d, GLA200d / GLA 200d 4Matic and GLA220d / GLA220d 4Matic), with transmissions consisting of a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch.

 

AMG-GLA45

Benefiting from the same exterior enhancements as the standard GLA, which also includes a redesigned front bumper and louvers for better cooling, new diffuser, silver Twin Blade AMG grille and multi-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels, the AMG-45 now offers the option of new a styling package called AMG Performance Studio.

Available as option, this consist of trim pieces painted in Night or Cosmos Black and sporting Matte Graphite or Yellow body sections, light alloy wheels with Matte Black or Yellow rim flanges, black AMG grille and Matte Graphite AMG bonnet stripes.

Inside, the AMG again mirrors of the upgrades of the standard GLA but with Artico man-made leather, red stitching, AMG Performance seats trimmed in Dinamica micro-fibres, Graphite Grey and a new instrument cluster with new gauges and number

Up front, the 45 remains mechanically unchanged with the 2.0-litre turbo still producing 280 kW and 475 N.m of torque, and linked to all four wheels via seven-sped DCT box.

Pricing in Germany will start at €28 940 (R418 393) for the base GLA180 rising to €56 852 (R821 924) for the AMG-GLA45.
