February new vehicle sales in the red

01.03.2017

Following last month's rise in the sales of new vehicles for the first time since 2015, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has recorded a slight decrease for February with exports also contracting somewhat.

Aggregate total domestic sales went down from 48 144 last year to 48 113 this year. Individual segments showed mixed results however with passenger vehicle sales falling 4.4% from 32 854 to 31 400 units.

Light commercial vehicles posted a significant upswing of 9.7% with sales jumping from 13 139 to 14 416, while medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles rose by 8.5% and 9.1% respectively. Exports declined by 0.2% to settle at 29 323 versus last year's 29 388.

Elsewhere, BMW South Africa has announced it will no longer report individual model sales, instead providing a single aggregate number. The German automaker has however stated that it will review this decision provided all other manufactures release their respective sales figures as well.
