GMSA repositions Astra range

06.02.2013

GENERAL South Africa (GMSA) has introduced a few styling and specification changes to the Opel Astra range.

The exterior changes feature a revised grille with distinctive Opel insignia and a redesigned front bumper with a more pronounced grille section. The fog lights and turn indicators have also received a minor update to complete the look. At the rear, the revised Astra now has chrome detailing, a revised bumper and new treatment for the licence-plate holder. The exterior styling package is completed with revised styling for the alloy rims across the range.

The new range kicks off with the 1.6 Essentia. Strangely (and fortunately), the price has been lowered compared to the model it replaces, but to do so Opel had to remove the cruise control, rear electric windows and curtain airbags. The price of this model has been reduced from R235 200 to R231 000.

The 1.4T Essentia Plus is a new addition to the range. It offers generally the same specification as the 1.6 Essentia, but includes all the bits Opel removed to keep the entry-level model’s price low.

It’s turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivers 103kW of power and 200Nm of torque and drive is via a six-speed manual gearbox. It allows the car to accelerate to 100km/h in 9.8 seconds on to a top-speed of 202km/h. Opel claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.9L/100km and an emissions figure of 138g/km.

This model retails for R248 000 and effectively replaces the Astra 1.4T Enjoy Plus, which is no longer available. Next in line is the 1.4T Enjoy, which includes automatic rain-sensing wipers, an anti-dazzle rear-view mirror and auto headlight control. All of this can be yours for a mere R257 000.

The Astra 1.6T Sport continues with no specification changes, but with a price reduction from R301 900 to R298 500, a saving of 1.1%. This model offers maximum power of 132 kW and 230 Nm of torque. This delivers a maximum speed of 221 km/h and will accelerate to 100km/h time in 8.5 seconds. Drive is via a six-speed manual transmission. Combined cycle fuel economy is 6.8 l/100km and Co2 emissions are 159g/km.

The Opel Astra is covered by a 5-yr/120 000km warranty with roadside assistance for the warranty period. It is also covered by a 5-yr/90 000km service plan.
