Geneva to spawn T-Roc

18.02.2014

MANY will remember the Volkswagen SUV concept called the Taigun, which displayed Volkswagen’s intention to build a small SUV. Now at the Geneva Motor Show, it will unveil a slightly bigger SUV concept called the T-Roc, which will slot in under the Tiguan and above the Taigun SUV that is currently in development.

It gets the letter  ‘T’ as a reference to the names of current and future Volkswagen SUVs such as the Taigun, Tiguan and Touareg while ‘Roc’ means  all-wheel-drive for on- and off-road conditions. The T-Roc has three driving modes namely ‘Street’, ‘Off-road’ and ‘Snow’.

Power for the T-Roc comes courtesy of a 135kW/380Nm turbo-diesel engine connected via a newly developed seven-speed DSG gearbox to a 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.  Performance stats include a top speed of 209km/h and a 0-100km/h time of 6.9 seconds.  Claimed fuel consumption is 4.9 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 129g/km.

The two-door, four-seat T-Roc will featurea well air-filled cabin thanks to its roof design.  The middle section of the roof is made from a carbon composite and can be removed in two halves, each of which can then be stored in the boot.

The T-Roc will use the same modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform as seen on the Golf 7, meaning that it weighs in at just 1 420kg. Its design featuresa 3D radiator grille with large honeycomb-shaped opening, LED headlights, daytime running lights and indicators and prominent round headlamp modules to pay homage to the Karmann Ghia Type 34.  At the rear, LED elements also abound with strong, purposeful design.

The interior gets a 12.3-inch colour-display tablet, which is locked into the dashboard with the upper two-thirds of the display extending out from the dashboard.  The multi-touch display has a range of colours that change according to the driving mode selected.
