Build at the Japanese auto giant's Swindon Plant in the UK, the hatch mirrors its sedan sibling on first glance, but with a shorter rear overhang at the back claimed by Honda to represent the sportiest iteration of the Civic yet.
Measuring 30 mm wider, 136 longer and 20 mm lower than the outgoing hatch, the Civic, aside from the redesigned rear end, has also been tweaked underneath the skin with a more ridged chassis, 41% increase in torsion rigidity, electric power steering derived from the outgoing Type R, a brand new multi-link rear suspension and for the first time on any production Honda, hydraulic fluid-filled bushings.
Inside, Honda claims a 95 mm improvement in rear space with room between the front seats said to have gone up by 35 mm. At the front, drivers now sit 35 mm closer to the ground than before, with boot space measuring 478-litres.
Like the sedan, the hatch features Honda's Connect 2 infotainment system accessed via a seven-inch touch screen display, that also incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety has also been stepped up with Honda' SENSING system boasting Collision Mitigation Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Sign Recognition, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor and Blind Spot Assist.
Up front, the Civic sees the departure of the normally aspirated petrol engines in favour of two turbocharged VTEC units mated to a brand-new six-speed manual or optional CVT box.
Displacing 1.0-litres, the new three pot serves as the entry-level engine in the Civic line-up, with power being rated at 95 kW and torque at 200 N.m. Combined fuel consumption is a claimed 4.7 L/100 km with emissions being as low as 106 g/km. Already doing duty in the sedan, the 1.5-litre mill churns out 134 kW with 240 N.m of torque on tap in the manual and 220 N.m in the CVT. Fuel consumption is a claimed 5.8 L/100 km and emissions at 133 g/km.
