Hyundai i20 gets rugged

WE HAVE seen manufacturers release slightly raised, more rugged-looking versions of B-segment hatchbacks with notable success; think Renault Sandero Stepway and the Toyota Etios Cross, to name a few. Now, Hyundai has hopped onto the bandwagon with the i20 Active.

The new model, due to go on sale in Europe early next year, is being marketed as a compact crossover. You’ll get an extra 20mm ground clearance, new suspension settings as well as a raised seat-height to give the driver that elevated feeling that’s all the rage in the automotive segment, at the moment.

Its exterior is characterised by skid plates on the front and rear, roof racks and cladding on the wheel arches, which give the model the off-road look that this segment is renowned for.

The i20 Active also gets a new three-cylinder 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine which, in Europe, will see two power ratings of 73kW and 88kW respectively. This is certainly an engine that needs to come to South Africa.
