January new vehicle sales end in the red

New vehicle sales continued its downward slope from December with the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) recording a 8.9% sales drop in January from 50 386 units in 2017, to 45 888 this year.

Individual segment were also mixed with new passenger vehicle sales recording a hefty 11.6% drop from 36 908 to 32 642, while light commercial vehicles declined by 2.1% from 11 940 to 11 689. Sales of medium duty commercial vehicles meanwhile were down 6.1%, and those of heavy duty commercials up by 4.5%. After as series of declines, exports bounced back in January with a significant 22.0% upswing from 11 651 units to 14 212.
