Jeep Grand Cherokee goes under the knife

JEEP has given the Grand Cherokee a decent mid-life upgrade to keep it competitive in the tough segment it plays in.

The upgrade includes a number of exterior changes, including a shorter seven-slat grille with new bi-xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights, new wheel designs and new exterior-colour options. The upgraded rear boasts larger tail lights with LED lighting, a larger and more aerodynamic rear spoiler, new bumpers and a re-sculpted tailgate that offers greater visibility.

The interior is enhanced thanks to the use of high-quality materials and model-specific colour and interior combinations. The centre console now features a new UConnect touch screen, while the controls for the radio and climate control are found below. The electronic shifter for the eight-speed transmission is now wrapped in leather.

Another new feature of the 2014 Grand Cherokee is the new three-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel, featuring sections of fine wood on Overland models. It features buttons for managing radio, cruise control, telephone and voice commands in complete safety. All trim levels come with paddle gear shifters mounted on the back of the steering wheel as standard.

The 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT model offers an exclusive Laguna leather and Alcantara interior.

Furthermore, the SRT’s cabin features race-inspired technology and exclusive appointments, including true carbon-fibre trim accents that adorn the instrument panel, driver’s and front passenger’s doors and the redesigned, SRT-exclusive heated three-spoke steering wheel with a flat bottom that features a bevy of comfort, convenience and connectivity controls and newly designed paddle shifters.

The most significant interior enhancement on the 2014 Grand Cherokee SRT is the new UConnect with 8.4-inch touch-screen display featuring SRT-exclusive Performance Pages that provides the driver instant feedback on steering-input measurements, power, torque, 0-100 km/h time, 100-0km/h braking distance and more.

Because it’s an off-roader at heart, the Grand Cherokee features a choice of 4x4 systems: Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II with rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential (ELSD) and the exclusive-to-SRT, Quadra-Trac Active on-demand four-wheel-drive system, also featuring a rear ELSD.

The standard Quadra-Lift air suspension system allows the ride height of the Grand Cherokee to change up to a maximum ground clearance of 280mm.

The car is powered by three petrol engine options: the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6, a 5.7-litre V8 and the powerful 6.4-litre HEMI V8 engine that powers the high-performance SRT model. All petrol engines available on the new 2014 Grand Cherokee meet Euro 6 emission standards.

The efficient 3.0-litre turbo, direct-injection V6 common-rail diesel engine fitted with Multijet II technology will be available at a later date.
