Lotus Elise now with even less weight than ever

20.03.2017

Following on from Exige Sport 380 shown last year, Lotus has unveiled an entry-level hardcore version of its venerable Elise.

Known as the Sprint, the latest Elise shaves 41 kg off the existing model for a total of 798 kg, the lightest since the 1996 original, with items contributing being a lithium-ion battery (9 kg), carbon fibre race seats (6 kg), forged alloy wheels (5 kg), polycarbonate rear screen, front access hatch, engine cover and roll over bar (6 kg) and two-piece front brakes (4 kg).

Redesigned front and rear bumpers, wider opening doors, new taillights and an open-gate manual gearbox are some of the new interior and exterior fitments.

As for power, the Sprint will be available with either a normally aspirated 1.6 developing 100 kW and 160 Nm of torque, or a supercharged version of the stalwart Toyota derived 1.8 making 162 kW and 250 Nm. Lotus claims a 0-60 mph (97 km/h) dash of 5.9 and 4.1 seconds respectively, with prices in the UK starting at £37 300 (R586 086) and £44 300 (R696 076).
