Mark Cronje to drive a Volkswagen Polo S2000 in the 2016 Rally Season

You did not read incorrectly and yes, we know that it’s not the first of April but according to sources it is true, Mark Cronje, the 2015 National Rally Champion and three-time South African National Rally Champion, will tackle his sixth national rally championship season in a Volkswagen S2000 Polo.

Cronje, who piloted a Ford Fiesta to victory last year, approached Volkswagen South Africa for a possible drive in a Polo for this season, after ending his relationship with Ford.

Volkswagen Motorsport will provide Mark and his navigator, Barry White, with the use of one of the S2000 Polos, used by the works team in 2015 for the season.

According to sources, the car will be prepared and run by Thompson Racing and Volkswagen will continue to provide technical support where required.

Matt Gennrich, general manager, Group Communications at Volkswagen Group South Africa, further added that Volkswagen has given Mark the Amarok for a year, for his daily commute.

Mark has secured his own sponsorship to race the Volkswagen Polo S2000 for the season. The 2016 National Rally Championship season kicks off in Welkom this weekend.
