Mazda previews three-row CX-8 in new teaser

Mazda has released the first exterior image of the new CX-8 crossover, previewing what the sportier version of the flagship CX-9 looks like.

Sporting a coupe-like appearance and to be offered with three row seating, the CX-8 rides on the same platform as the CX-9 and indeed boasts the same 2 930 mm wheelbase, but with a reduction in overall length (4 900 mm vs. 5 075 mm), height (1 730 mm vs. 1 747 mm) and width (1 840 mm vs. 1 969 mm).

Already confirmed to debut in Japan later this year, the CX-8 will drop the CX-9's 170 kW / 420 Nm 2.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine for Mazda's familiar 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D turbodiesel engine, which in the CX-5 produces 129 kW and 420 Nm of torque. It be offered only with a six-speed automatic gearbox in either front or all-wheel drive configurations.

Like the China-only CX-4 and indeed the CX-9, the CX-8 is not expected to debut in South Africa anytime soon.
