Mitsubishi Triton dons sporty attire ahead of Thai Expo

A Thailand based magazine has leaked alleged first images of a new special edition version of the Mitsubishi Triton, bound for the Thai Motor Expo in Bangkok next week.

Known as the Triton Athlete, the pictures obtained by Headlight Magazine shows Mitsubishi's likely rival to the Ford Ranger Wildtrak and Toyota Hilux Rocco featuring a blacked out honeycomb grille and lower air intake, black mirrors, door handles, side steps and 17-inch alloy wheels, wheel arch cladding, black rear bumper and orange and black decals.

Inside, the interior is trimmed in black leather with orange inlays on the seats and Athlete embossed front backs, Athlete badged floor mats and orange stitching on the steering wheel, gear knob, centre storage box and door panels.

Available on the two-wheel drive Plus trim level and regular four-wheel drive, the Athlete retains the same engine with the 2.4-litre DI-D turbodiesel motor punching out 133 kW and 430 Nm of torque, connected to either a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic gearbox, the latter the sole option on the four-wheel drive.

No pricing has yet been announced, and while aesthetically enhanced versions of existing double cab pick-ups continue to spike in popularity, the Triton Athlete is not expected to arrive in South Africa anytime soon.
