Mitsubishi's Qashqai rival teased, revives Eclipse name

Mitsubishi has released a pair of teaser images showing its brand-new crossover SUV, the Eclipse Cross.

Set to rival the likes of the Nissan Qashqai, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan and Mazda CX-5, the newcomer revives the famed Eclipse name last used in 2012 on the Galant-based sports coupe in the US, and draws visual inspiration from the XR PHEV shown at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

As reported earlier this month, the striking Eclipse will be powered by a new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a revised version of the 2.2 DI-D turbodiesel used in the European market Outlander and ASX. A six-speed gearbox and front-wheel drive are standard with four-wheel drive and possibility a CVT optional on some models.

Like the XR, the Eclipse Cross will debut in Geneva next month with sales in Europe expected to commence on the second half of this year.
