New Ghost on the scene

THE CURRENT-generation Rolls Royce Ghost has been with us since 2009 and has become the Rolls for the younger generation.

There is now a new version of the Ghost. It features a new design that includes restyled headlamps with LED daytime running lights, resculpted bumpers, additional chrome inserts to the improved front air intakes and new 19-inch alloy wheels.

The interior gets redesigned seats in the front and rear, a subtle change to the instrument dials as well as the option of two new veneers, namely Paldao and Walnut Burr Crossband. There is what the brand calls the Spirit of Ecstasy Rotary Controller, which features on-board Wi-Fi facilitated email, file sharing, telephony, video-conferencing and even television. The new multimedia interface and navigation system is displayed on a new 10.25-inch high-definition screen. This system includes a 20.5Gb hard drive that can hold around 5 700 songs downloadable via the USB port.

The new Ghost II has what is called Bespoke Audio, which has 18 individually-tuned speakers with both theatre and studio settings along with two bass speakers located in the boot.iPod and iPad connections allow the import of music, but also podcast and audio book downloads. Bluetooth audio streaming is an option too from one of two phones that can be paired with equal functionality.

There is also new lighting technology at work. It makes use of electronically controlled reflectors that move in the direction of travel in response to steering-wheel turns to give a greater depth of vision when cornering. The lighting also has new glare-free technology, meaning that when a car approaches, light is deflected to ensure the oncoming driver is not dazzled.

Powering the Ghost is a 6.6-litre twin-turbo V12 mated to the brilliant eight-speed ZF transmission. The transmission is also satellite controlled, meaning that it uses GPS mapping to ensure that the driver is always in the correct gear for the situation.
