New LEAF better in 100 more ways

12.04.2013

WHILE South Africans can only speculate about whether we will ever see the Nissan LEAF on local shores, the second-generation of this all-electric vehicle is already fit for production and will shortly be released in the UK.

Buyers can now get the option of three different spec levels and, probably most importantly, can now lease batteries from Nissan.

The new LEAF features over 100 improvements over its predecessor, with many of these the result of feedback from the active community of owners. Probably the biggest improvement of all, the LEAF’s range has been extended from 175km to 199km. This was achieved by improving the car’s aerodynamics and regenerative braking system, as well as a more efficient E-powertrain.

Another contributing factor is the introduction of a new heating system, which is 70% more efficient through the use of a heat pump in the system. The battery will also charge in just half the time of its predecessor if connected to a recommended power supply. The charging point has also been relocated, resulting is better boot space.

In an effort in bring even more peace of mind to its customers, Nissan UK has enhanced the LEAF’s battery warranty. In addition to the five-year guarantee covering against defective materials and workmanship, the guarantee also now protects against capacity loss, with the commitment to repair or replace a battery which falls short of what might reasonably be expected.

The Nissan LEAF will be manufactured at Nissan’s Sunderland plant.
