New vehicle sales end May in the red

05.06.2017

New vehicles continued to slide in May with the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) also recording a substantial decline in new vehicle exports.

Aggregate total domestic sales for the month experienced a 2.6% drop from 42 912 units last year to 41 783, while exports nosedived by 12.0% from 2016's record 33 619 to 29 596.

Individual segments were down across the board with new passenger vehicle sales dropping 2.5% from 26 980 to 26 317, and light commercial vehicles by 1.5% from 13 620 to 13 410. The market for medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles experienced the biggest drops with declines of 13.6% and 10.0% respectively.

An interesting side note is that General Motors South Africa released a combined sales figure of 522 units for its passenger vehicles, although those for its commercial range; Chevrolet Spark Pronto, Chevrolet Utility and Isuzu KB, were separate.
