New vehicle sales’ five month gain ends in August

03.09.2018

In a reversal of fortunes, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) recorded its first decrease in the sales of new vehicles during August since February this year, with exports jumping back into the green after a substantial drop in July.

Attributed to a weak Rand and escalating vehicle prices, new car sales fell by 2.5% from 49 198 units last year to 47 964 this year, while exports increased by 7.7% to settle at 32 247 from the 29 930 recorded last year.

Individual segments were even with new passenger vehicles sales falling by 2.2% from 32 169 to 31 447, while light commercial vehicles nosedived by 5.5% from 14 822 to 13 956. Gains continued to be made in the sales of medium and heavy-duty commercial vehicles however, with the former going up by 9.3% to 1 859 units and the latter by 18.8%% to 294 units sold.
