Nissan NP300 - Does what it says on the tin.

05.06.2016

With the bakkie sales outselling passenger cars, South Africa is second only to America when it comes to our love of the ‘pick up’.

Over the years there has been an increased shift to a more leisure orientated design but what if you don’t need all the fancy toys? Well, apart from the plethora of Chinese models there are not many true workhorses out there anymore. Luckily if it’s a back to basic, no nonsense work bakkie you want, then Nissan’s Np300 is the one for you.

In longwheel form, this venerable thoroughbred is built to work. While the older NP300 engines were a bit noisy, the new one is quieter, with less vibration and is generally smoother in its delivery. Power is supplied by Nissan’s 2.5 litre common rail diesel engine, delivering 98 kw and 304 Nm of torque, which allows the bakkie to pull 120 km/h effortlessly while fully loaded. While there are newer bakkie models out there, the NP300, where the ‘N’ stands for Nissan and the ‘P’ for pickup and the “300” stands for the series number, this bakkie can still stand up to them in terms of low cost of ownership with a longer service interval of 15 000km and low fuel consumption. Fuel economy is stated at 8 litres/100km and a CO2 emission figure of 211g/km.

As a work vehicle the most important feature is going to be how much can it load? Its single rail steel ladder chassis, toughened suspension and load capacity of 1240kg gives it a class leading load capacity. Whether it’s on the farm or on a construction site, power steering as standard, a 12.8 turning circle and a ground clearance of 210mm on some modelsmakes for easy manoeuvring.

The NP300 comes with 6 year/150 000km warranty,, but that’s not all Imperial Nissan Parow is celebrating its June Carnival with a massive R40 000 saving on the Nissan NP300 2.5 TDi Base.
