Polo ups the style ante beautifully

15.01.2014

IN WHAT is probably the most important mid-life makeover of the year, Volkswagen has released information on the facelifted Polo, due later this year.

The Golf 7 lends quite a few of its advanced technologies to the new Polo, as Volkswagen continues to democratise technology that advances safety, practicality, comfort and efficiency.

Exterior

The exterior features more precise lines on the redesigned front bumper and grille, with a chrome line that separates the front fog lights. LED headlights - a first in this segment - will be available as an option. The rear receives new lights and bumper with a range of new alloy wheel designs completing the look.

Interior

The interior sees a great overhaul, with new instruments, steering wheel and heating and ventilation controls on the centre console.

Volkswagen’s touch-screen modular infotainment system - as seen in the Golf - will make its way into the Polo. It features a proximity sensor and function that reacts to wiping movements by the fingers, as used on smartphones.

Powertrains

Powering the Polo will be a whole new bag of EU6-compliant engines with efficiency improvements of up to 21%.

Leading the way are two new 1.0-litre MPI units producing 45kW and 56kW. Next up are two 1.2-litre four-cylinder TSI engines with 67kW and 82kW. The 1.4-litre TSI motor with cylinder deactivation will still be available, but with power upped to 112kW. The range-topping Polo GTI will be available next year.

Diesel power comes courtesy of two new 1.4-litre three-cylinder engines, available in 56kW and 67kW derivatives.

In the United Kingdom, the diesel engine in the Polo BlueMotion will be replaced by a new turbocharged 1.0-litre petrol unit that produces 67kW.

Safety

New optional safety features include a driver alert system and front assist with city emergency braking and automatic cruise control.
