Porsche confirms 718 Cayman T is happening

With Porsche soon to discontinue the 991.2 generation of the current 911, a new report from the United Kingdom has claimed that the 718 Cayman will spawn a lightweight T version to indirectly take the position of its iconic sibling.

According to Auto Express, the T will slot in between the Cayman S and GTS (pictured), use the same 2.5-litre turbocharged flat-four as the latter albeit re-tuned from 269kW to 265kW, and with various weight saving materials such a lightweight glass rear window, fabric door pulls, lightweight sport seats and removal of some of the sound proofing materials as well as the infotainment system to cut weight by some 20kg.

As with the 911 T, the Cayman T will offer a number of options such as the Sport Chrono Package, titanium exhaust, stickier wheels and full-bucket seats. Given its driver focused emphasis, transmission choices could include the six-speed manual ‘box as standard, with the seven-speed PDK being optional.

While Porsche has so far declined to provide much details, the publication claims that the Cayman T could arrive before the current model’s lifecycle is up, so expect it to debut somewhere in 2019.
