Porsche renames Boxster and Cayman models

THE Porsche brand has been synonymous with numbers; its most iconic model is the 911. Its hybrid hyper car, the 918, is all about performance figures and now its entry-level sports cars will also feature numbers as part of their nomenclature.

The mid-engine sports vehicles - formerly known as the Boxster and Cayman - will now be known as the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, respectively. The reason behind the name change is because of the history associated with the 718 badge. The year was 1957… Porsche released a sports car badged the 718, which was very successful in the motorsport realm during this period.

The choice of this designation is also due to the fact that future Cayman models will feature flat-four turbocharged engines, which are perhaps the biggest news. Other changes include the fact that the Boxster will now be priced above the Cayman, much like in the 911 range, where the Cabriolet is more costly than the Coupé.
