Poulter impresses in Stage 3

The third stage of the 39th edition of one of the world’s toughest off-road events, the Dakar Rally saw another impressive performance by a South African.

This time it was Dakar debutant Leeroy Poulter who took his Toyota Hilux to an impressivethird place in Stage 3. The route took the drivers between San Rafael and San Juan where Poulter and co-driver Robert Howie secured 10th position overall. Fellow South African Giniel de Villiers maintained his sixth overall spot by finishing the stage in 13th position.

Spaniard Nani Roma and navigator Michel Perin took their Mini to a Stage 3 victory in front of Krzysztof Holowczyc and Konstantin Zhiltsov, who are also competing in a Mini. Eleven-time Dakar winner Stephane Peterhanselslipped back to fifth place and will need to recover some 24 minutes.

The Team Ford Racing duo of Lucio Alvarez and Ronnie Graue managed to recover some of the time they had lost over the first two stages, when they made up 92 positions to finish the third stage 38th overall. All the teams will hope for a solid Stage 4 as they tackle the 301km special stage through the Cordillera de Tontal Mountains in the Andes later today.

The bike category saw no changes at the top, with Joan Barreda maintaining a healthy lead of over 13 minutes over defending champion Cyril Despres. This is the second stage win for Barreda while Factory KTM rider Marc Coma put in a solid display by finishing the day third-fastest.
