REPORT: Fiat planning Toro pick-up inspired seven-seat SUV

With Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) not expected to introduce a second version of the Dodge Journey and its Fiat Freemont twin once production of the current models ends, a new report from South America has alleged that the automaker is looking at a possible SUV version of the Fiat Toro pick-up.

Although expected to share most of its underpinnings with the new Jeep Compass, Autoblog Argentina reports that the rumoured SUV will feature styling derived from the South American market only Toro, with seating for seven and a choice of rear-or four-wheel drive.

No engine details have so far been named, although power, in South America at least, will likely come from the same range of powerunits as the Toro, made up of a 1.8-litre E.torQ petrol-ethanol developing between 97 and 101 kW / 184-189 Nm of torque, a 2.4-litre Tigershark petrol-ethanol producing 128-137 kW and 230-244 Nm, and a 2.0-litre MultiJet turbodiesel cranking out 125 kW and 350 Nm.

On the Toro, a six-speed automatic gearbox is standard on the 1.8 and a ZF-sourced nine-speed on the 2.4, while the diesel offers a choice of six-speed manual or the latter automatic. As the SUV will initially be limited to South America, expect the choice of engines and transmissions to be carried over.
