REPORT: Next VW Polo GTI to get Golf's 2.0 TSI

21.04.2017

Having been spied and rendered in the lead-up to its world premiere later this year, a new report has alleged that the GTI version of the forthcoming Volkswagen Polo could use the same 2.0 TSI engine as the Golf GTI.

According to Britain's Auto Express, the new mill will replace the current Polo GTI's 141 kW 1.8 TSI, and reportedly produce 147 kW, the same as the Golf 5 GTI, and on par with the new 1.5-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost of the Ford Fiesta ST.

Based on the same A0-platform with the new Seat Ibiza, the Polo will also feature a longer wheelbase and in-car tech derived from the facelifted Golf, with engines expected to include a trio of 1.0 TSI petrol units, Volkswagen's new 1.5 TSI Evo and a pair of 1.6 TDI units.

A mild-hybrid model is also being mulled with transmissions likely to include a five-or-six speed manual as standard, and a seven-speed DSG as an option.
