RGM revs-up Golf R

WE WERE very impressed by the new Golf R, here at Autodealer. Not only is it blisteringly quick in a straight line but it’s also fun to drive and a very usable daily driver. Never satisfied with standard vehicle performance, the guys at Rob Green Motorsport (RGM) have been tinkering with their own Golf R.

RGM are very familiar with the 2.0-litre turbocharged FSI (direct injection) engine, which is beefed-up in the R but still similar, nonetheless. In standard form, the R produces a claimed 206kW and RGM claim that on its dyno, the new car made 174kW/380Nm at the wheels.

The upgrade that RGM offers is called the S1 upgrade and comes with a Techniflow 85mm downpipe, an RGM Plug-in Power Software (PPS) module and a performance air filter. RGM claim the figures have now been boosted to 203kW/448Nm with better bottom-end power, too.

In tests at Reef altitude, RGM claim 0-100km/h sprint figures of 4.4 seconds and a standing kilometre at a terminal speed of 229km/h.

To improve things further, there’s a 76mm Techniflow stainless steel performance exhaust as well as a carbon fibre cold air induction intake system developed in-house. Another popular upgrade is the adjustable Pedal Booster that improves the throttle response.

The S1 upgrade costs R15 000 and is also applicable to new-generation Audi S3 owners. All conversions and upgrades carried out by RGM, carry a six-month/20 000km warranty on parts and workmanship.
