Return of an Audi V8 classic

18.01.2013

THE THIRD generation Audi RS4 is finally available in South Africa, but only in Avant format. There’s no RS4 sedan planned for production, which is fine with us. Audi is renowned the world over for designing the finest looking station wagons in the motoring industry.

You have to admit, the RS4 Avant is a handsome brute. The shape will be familiar to all A4 drivers, but a few additional styling decals, in addition to the 20mm suspension drop, give it that added dose of exclusivity. You certainly won’t mistake it for any other Avant in Audi’s range.

The new RS4 Avant uses the same high-revving, normally aspirated V8 engine that powers the RS5 coupé. This monstrous 331kW powertrain accelerates the RS4 from 0-100km/h in 4.7 seconds flat! Top speed is limited to 250km/h. On the flipside, Audi claims an average fuel consumption of less than 11 litres/100km. Drivers can let the dual-clutch transmission shift automatically or change gears manually using the selector lever or the paddles on the steering wheel. For fast starts the Launch Control can be activated.  Like every Audi RS model, the RS4 Avant comes standard with quattro permanent all-wheel-drive. Most of the power is sent to the rear wheels, which should make it a fun car to play with.

The Audi drive select driving dynamics system is standard equipment on this particular vehicle. With it, the driver can switch between four modes: comfort, auto, dynamic and individual – to determine the characteristics of the steering, the seven-speed S tronic and the throttle valve. Audi drive select can even vary the sound of the exhaust system and double-declutching when downshifting in dynamic mode. The interior is clad completely in black, with carbon inlays and an aluminium-look finish.

The pedals and footrest are also given an aluminium-look finish, complemented by aluminium inserts with RS4 badging in the door sills. The driver information system with colour display includes an RS menu with a lap timer and oil thermometer. Audi connect is also available as an option, connecting the vehicle to the internet and turning it into a Wi-fi hotspot. Audi has been extremely generous with the standard specification, which includes: satellite navigation, seats with Alcantara/leather trim, Bluetooth cell phone preparation, electric tailgate, flat-bottom steering wheel, Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights as well as LED taillights and  19-inch wheels.

The Audi RS4 Avant is now available in South Africa and is priced at R875 000, inclusive of all taxes and the five-year/100 000km Audi Freeway Plan.
