Six reasons why the Ferrari 488 Spider will be awesome

29.07.2015

THERE’S a new Ferrari on the way, a cabriolet version of the sublime 488. We’ve compiled a list of six reasons why the latest convertible baby Ferrari will be an amazing car.

1. It’s a Ferrari - The brand is on a bit of a roll at the moment; the prancing horse can do no wrong it would seem. If the 488 is anything to go by then the open-top version will be even more exhilarating.

2. It’s turbocharged - But wait... turbocharging destroys engine noise and this is a convertible? Well, Ferrari has worked very hard at optimising the engine sound by working on the exhaust headers and utilising a flat-plane crankshaft. After the sound of the hard-top model we cannot wait to hear how wild it sounds with the top down.

3. It’s the most powerful mid-engine V8 to feature a retractable hard-top roof - That’s quite a mouthful but it also happens to be true, with 493kW/760Nm on tap. As far as the roof goes, it’s the first RHT (Retractable Hard Top) on a car of this architecture. The reason for this roof being favoured over a fabric version is a weight saving of 25 kilograms as well as improved interior ambience.

4. It’s fast - It will do 0-100 km/h in three seconds and more astonishingly go from 0-200 km/h in 8.7 seconds. Top speed is expected to be around 325km/h which, for a Spider model, is quite dazzling.

5. Well, just look at it... - The 488 was an achingly beautiful car but the new Spider variant simply looks downright sinister. There are so many angles to admire that we might have to sell a vital organ.

6. Its signature colour isn’t red - There’s something quite cool about a Ferrari that is unveiled to the public in any colour besides the brand’s signature red. We like this new hue, called Blu Corsa livery.
