Codenamed Y400 and known as the G4 Rexton in its home market, the G4 designation will be dropped for international markets, the newcomer draws heavily from the LIV-2 concept shown in Paris last year from a styling point, with measurements of 1 800 m in height, a wheelbase of 2 864 mm, overall length of 4 850 mm and width of 1 920 mm.
To be offered with either rear or all-wheel drive, the seven-seat Rexton will continue SsangYong's long standing tradition of using Mercedes-Benz engines with petrol power coming from a 2.0-litre turbo developing 165kW and 350Nm of torque, and diesel also from a 2.0-litre making 133kW/400Nm. Benz's 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox will initially be the sole option although a new eight-speed self shifter will be introduced at a later stage.
In addition to a more upmarket interior, new creature comforts will include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 9.2-inch touchscreen display with surround view camera system and satellite navigation, while Lane Departure Warning and Autonomous Braking will be some of the safety tech offered.
Expected to debut in South Korea during the first quarter of this year and in other markets towards the end of 2017, it remains unknown whether the new Rexton will come to South Africa.
