Volkswagen Amarok V6 TDI muscles up Down Under

With Mercedes-Benz set to launch the V6 oil burning X350d soon, Volkswagen Australia has confirmed availability of a more powerful version of the Amarok V6 TDI.

Previewed by the Adventura Exclusive concept shown in Frankfurt last year, the 3.0-litre mill now produces 190 kW and 580 Nm of torque instead of 165 kW / 550 Nm, mirroring the X350d’s power output but with 30 Nm more torque. It will continue to be mated to an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox with 4Motion all-wheel drive standard.

Down Under, the engine will initially power the range topping Amarok Ultimate in rivalling the X350d Power, before being rolled out on other models.

According to, the Amarok TDI 580 will retail for around $70 000 (R637 834) in Ultimate spec, but if it becomes available in South Africa, expect that figure to be well over R800 000 or possibly nudge R900 000 as the local market 165 kW / 550 Nm Extreme commands a sticker price of R784 400.
