Volkswagen ‘Roc GTS ushers in new engine options

THE Volkswagen Scirocco has been with us for some time now and recently had its mid-life refresh. Some may remember the pre-facelift model in GTS guise, which has now been applied to the updated Scirocco model, too.

GTS gets new engines

Volkswagen seems to have done away with twin-charged 1.4-litre TSIs in its performance models and the Scirocco is no different, with the small capacity unit now being replaced by a de-tuned 2.0-litre with 132kW on tap while the high-power variant now gets 162kW from the same 2.0-litre power plant.

Transmission options

The 132kW/280Nm variant is available with a six-speed manual transmission while the 162kW/350Nm GTS version comes exclusively with the DSG automatic gearbox, while the flagship 188kW/350Nm R model is also only available with the DSG automatic transmission.

The 132kW variant will go from 0-100km/h in 7.4 seconds and on to a top speed of 227km/h while consuming a claimed 6.1 litres/100km. The GTS 162kW model will do the dash to 100km/h in 6.9 seconds and go all the way to 246km/h while consuming 6.4 litres/100km.

Tell me about the GTS

The badge can be dated back as far as the early 80s with the original Scirocco which, with the iconic badge attached, also came with the distinctive GTS stripe across the bonnet to the rear section. The new model retains the same style stripe while benefiting from new 18-inch alloy wheels, exterior bits from the R-line body kit option, black side mirrors and of course, the GTS insignias on the front grille and rear tailgate.

Inside the GTS you’ll find GTS badges aplenty, a retouched steering wheel, black headliner, a golf ball-shaped gear knob, chrome accents, contrasting red stitching for the seats, safety belts, handbrake and gearlever as well as the Composition Media infotainment system with a 5.8-inch colour touchscreen with Bluetooth, CD-player, USB, MP3 functionality, AUX and SD-card  compatibility

Warranty and service plan

The model range comes with a five-year/90 000km Service Plan as well as a three-ear/120 000km warranty.
